Happy New Year! I have been working the waters of the Trinity River over the past month and we have January Steelhead Trinity River - Fryes Fishingseen great fishing and some tough fishing. The best steelhead fishing is dependent on the water conditions and currently, the Trinity River is running low and clear.

For the past week, good fishing is happening mixed in with some tough days. More steelhead are on the way. Late January through early February always produces as the winter run of steelhead arrive. Wet weather is the key to the fast or sudden movement of these fish.
The longer forecast for this season, leading into late February early March can best be summarized by “We are never really sure”. All a fishing report can do is report on how it’s been, but historically, we see the most memorable fishing between January and mid-March on the Trinity River.

Lower Sacramento River

January Steelhead Fishing Trinity River - Fryes FishingThe Lower Sacramento in Redding is a great alternative, offering consistent fishing for Rainbow Trout. Perfect for a 1st or 2nd day of fishing coinciding with a day or two on the Trinity.

As the days start to longer in February, we will see warmer days, a less rushed fishing experience, profuse insect hatches on the Lower Sacramento and Trinity River, better fly fishing and more of the great fishing we are so lucky to have available, right here in and around Redding, California — all year long!
